Groundbreaking update

I drive by here almost every day on the way home from work, so I get to notice whenever anything changes.

The words topological precision came to mind today.

Until the end of the summer, the site of the 1999 warehouse fire had seen no activity for a few years. Then, all of a sudden, the site was excavated.

Then, after having been fully excavated, they started filling it back in.

There has been relatively thin layer after thin layer of fill added, week after week.

I've never seen anything like it.

My Dad used to tell me that when he was in the Army, they'd make you dig a hole. Then somebody'd toss a cigarette butt into the hole and say, "Now, ...bury it."

They're going to put the new Fire Station here, however, so I assume that all this careful layering and packing down is being done so that it won't sink.
