I've gotten a bunch of chastising e-mails regarding my Public Transportation in Worcester post from yesterday, that I'm fully in concert with in spirit. There's also an article in the paper today, focusing on the same issue. That issue is, of course, if the buses stop running, then what happens to those who depend on the buses for transportation?
This is a very important issue. What happens to the non-affluent in a market based economy? This includes all the millions who are one paycheck away from losing their homes or apartments, losing their cars, and losing just about everything. It's not just the poor who are feeling the impact of global economic changes that have been ongoing for at least half of my lifetime.
However, I have to admit that yesterday's post is also strongly slanted to argue for a situation that'll make ME more money as a taxi driver.
Heh.
If the buses stop running, then every taxi driver in the city will end up swimming in a river of cash.
Ideology is fun to debate, but the cold hard fact is that the rent has to get paid, one way or another. The same thing applies to the WRTA.
Who's gonna pay?
As a property owner in the city of Worcester, I'M going to have to pay extra to keep the buses running?
No freakin' way!
