A couple of months ago, I made a comment in a post about some work being done in Rice Square, and how there wasn't any possible way they could ever make this square any bumpier than it already was. There was a Bump Installation Crew there at that time, spelunking along a course under the square that could've yielded a fairly noteworthy bump after they were done, had this been anyhwere else. Now, two months later, the fine work they actually DID do in restoring the road surface back then is going to be obliterated and lost forever...
Of course, re-paving this entire intersection is going to make it one of the smoothest intersections on Grafton Hill. And they've scarified the pavement on Grafton Street almost to Dorchester Street, beyond that side of the intersection, so that noteworthy "frozen river rapids" quality will finally be taken care of. Likewise, the short block from the square to Wholly Connoli, where the "frozen river rapids" used to start.note:
In case you have no clue what "frozen river rapids" I'm talking about, take a ride out Belmont Street towards Shrewsbury and check out how the pavement is all rippled at the intersection of Plantation Street, or down at the bottom of the hill at the intersection of Lake Ave. All those ripples in the pavement are caused by overloaded trucks sitting at the light during hot weather, literally melting the pavement and deforming it under their wheels.
And just to calm the potential outrage of the majority of truck drivers who run within the weight limits, we can also suggest that the paving job might have been substandard... if, indeed, the paving of streets in this city has any standards, or the personnel needed to make sure they're adhered to.
