Square Clouds

I had a passenger in the cab this morning, on the way to UMass, and we were both at a loss to explain these two clouds. I spotted them (pretty hard to miss) when we were at Belmont St. and the distressway at 7 O'clock.

They were clearly just clouds, but I don't ever recall seeing a cloud with right angles before, never mind two of them side by side.

Descriptive thoughts such as anomalous, out of the ordinary, and WTF all came to mind as we continued on toward UMass in the heavy traffic.

It occured to me that I might be able to get a better picture of them after I dropped my passenger off at the hospital. Just in case they had dispersed by that time, though, I snapped another while we waited at the traffic light at Seabury Heights.

As soon as I dropped off my passenger, the computer immediately gave me another pickup, this time over in Shrewsbury, so I figured I'd be getting closer to being underneath those two clouds by going in that direction, and didn't bother to take a picture from UMass.

Unfortunately, the picture I ended up taking at Rte 9 and Quinsig didn't get saved (I pushed the wrong button). By that time, though, the two squares had morphed a bit and within less than a minute, they had further changed shape and were beginning to get obscured by other clouds, so that was the end of the show.

I'll be very surprised if I ever have the opportunity to post a "Square Clouds 2"...

Hi Jeff -
You should send the pictures to meteorologist Matt Noyes at NECN. He does a piece called "Sky Scenes" every week and these would be right up his alley!
Very cool
