Earth Hour

The hour is from 8 pm to 9 pm tonight.

The premise of saving energy by using less is something that I'm sorta-kinda lukewarm about, though. Yes, it's true that if we all use less electricity, less gasoline, and less of any other energy generated by fire... then it will be a good thing.

There's a larger set of data to inspect in this wise, however, beginning (coincidentally enough) with the conservation of energy in physics. I beat this drum whenever the opportunity presents itself because this concept of saving energy as a social movement tends to obscure how it is being corrupted. As long as people are willing to believe that alternative fuels are the answer, for instance, the question will continue to be obscured.

And the question is very basic: How much longer can the Earth support a fire society?

If you participate in Earth Hour tonight, spend that hour thinking about how human beings might be able to live here on Earth without burning anything for their energy needs.

And you might also consider how different the world would be today if the United States had spent the past five years focusing a vast level of resources to harness Solar, Geothermal, Wind, Water, and Tidal energy to generate electricity in America... instead of focusing that same vast level of resources to waging the so-called Global War On Terror.
