Apparently, there has been a vacuum of response from the city regarding the specifics of any funding for WCCA-TV13, the Public Access cable channel here in Worcester. The immediate future of channel 13 appears to be completely up in the air and unresolved for those who are most involved with the operation of the facility.
The situation has gotten to the point where the station is calling an open meeting set for next Wednesday, May 21st, at 6 p.m. to deal with the issue of future funding. The City Manager, the Mayor, and the City Council have, as I understand it, been invited to attend.
It's abundantly clear that there have been elements in Worcester who have advocated, both openly and behind closed doors, to cut off funding for public access TV over the past few years, and that the justification, ostensibly, has been to "save money" by doing so.
Unfortunately, the money will not be "saved" if funding is cut off from the station... it will simply be pocketed by one or two city employees who make believe that the work they do in their "gravy jobs" is on a par with the pay.
You can't get a better "bang for the buck" than the public access channel in this city. Consequently, the proposition of shutting it down is nothing short of shameful and beneath contempt.
