Grocery Shopping in Worcester

I snapped this picture on the fly earlier today while heading out Southbridge Street to make my little video clip.

This spot is where I'm told a new supermarket will be built, next to Sclamo's.

It got me wondering why anyone would think we need another supermarket east of Park Avenue... I mean, it does seem to me that there's some sort of invisible "do not cross" line for supermarkets in the City of Worcester, doesn't it?

So, I just spent a few minutes putting together a Supermarket Map of Worcester so that I could see whether this was actually true or not.

There's three Stop & Shops, two Big-Y's, five Price Choppers, and two Shaws. Under "other" there's a Price Rite on Goldstar, and a Compare Foods on Main Street between Wellington and Chandler. There are lots of other places in the city to buy food, but not the size of the places I just listed.

That's fourteen full sized supermarkets in the city, and none of them have dared to tread more than a few microns toward the west side of the city.

You are not kidding.

Speaking as someone who lives on the West Side, Big Y is as close as we get. It's a PAIN in the neck!

I'd really hoped they'd open something useful, like a Trader Joe's, at what was Tatnuck Bookseller. No such luck.

I honestly can't help but think this is more than likely the West Side's own doing. I am going over this in my head and the only place west of Park Ave I can come up with for a supermarket is Mill St or 122 headed out towards Paxton. Seems like anywhere else would piss the West Siders off. And we wouldn't want that.

There is a similiar thing going on within the urban core. Compare Foods is ok, but it really doesn't cut it for me, which means that from downtown my options are the Chopper's on either Park or Cambridge or the Shaw's on Gold Star. Luckily for me on my way home from work I pass 3 supermarkets in Shrewsbury.

I welcome the Price Rite on Southbridge.

You're right about downtown. If you don't do compare, you have to substantially bus it or drive.

I have to admit I wasn't paying attention: was there any controversy over the Big Y on May? Because I know that I'm not the only one who'd rather not schlep as far as I do for groceries.

(Also, this is one where targeting the population might be good. Whole Foods, maybe? Not that I can afford that!)
