I've explored the subject of the post invasion Afghanistan Opium trade at great length in posts I made to an old blog beginning in January 2006. Basically, the fact that Afghanistan opium production only dropped when the Taliban put the squash on it in 2001, and then the US invaded and, in effect, restored that production is... well, it's the most ridiculously obvious cause and effect sequence that could possibly be demonstrated.
Clearly, Afghanistan was invaded to restore opium production.
