This was truly priceless! Rick Rushton, after bobbing for a potato, runs over to get it into the barrel. This was one of four parts of the race, which also included tossing giant rubber snakes into a barrel, using their feet to move a cabbage through an obstacle course, and all the while carrying a glass of beer without spilling any. This was a two part relay, with the first leg also including the opening of a can of Guiness Stout and pouring it into the glass. The team from the Wachusett Brewery ended up in the final playoff against the Rushton Twins, Rick and Dan.
It was a close race, but the Rushton Twins won the first annual Boiled Cabbage O'Lympics and were presented with a trophy by Lt. Governor Tim Murray.
This was a lot of fun to watch, and I'm sure that the competitors all enjoyed this part of the Festival, as well...Well, maybe everyone except Andy LaCombe. He had a real tough time of it at the potato dunking pool, trying to nail one of those potatos! He looked pretty ragged when he finally succeeded!
But all's well that ends well, and the festival, created by Paul Foley, Julie Creedon, and John Creedon Jr, was truly a success.
