The Big D on Mill Street

This is a shot of the former Big D supermarket on Mill Street.

It was closed so long ago, that it didn't even get a chance to become a Price Chopper... or maybe they did change the name to Price Chopper before this one closed... (memory, y'know).

The strangest things happen when accounting departments rule the world. The store closed around mid-2003, but the rent continued to be paid ever since.

So I guess it's okay that the building is derelict. Nobody's losing money on this property. The rent is always paid. And it will keep getting paid for another two years, according to this May 2007 article.

According to that story, the Big D closed on Mill Street when they opened their new Price Chopper store at 50 Cambridge Street. It's a real head-scratcher for me, because I just can't figure two rents for, basically, one store. Y'know?

This is a sign on the side of the building facing Mill Street.

You have to drive right up on top of it to read it, though. Well, maybe some people don't have to, but even this close, I still need my glasses to read it.

If this was the new court-house, there'd be plenty of parking for everybody. But, with no business in the building for the past five years, I guess that restricting the parking to "customers" and banning tractor trailers makes a lot of sense.

Yup... Another two years before this eyesore at the beginning of Mill Street might actually change.

It was a Price Chopper before it closed.

Is there not a Mill Street Task force looking into this?

My Grand Mother lived on Gates lane and used to walk down to the store every single day to buy her groceries for the next days meals.

At least the WFD gets good use of the mega parking lot for drills.
