Turtle Boy Square

Here's a drive-by shot of the Turtle Boy from around 10:30 this morning.

I think they should re-name Salem Square to Turtle Boy Square.

I'm sure that there are people who, in their efforts to market the city, would very much like to NOT pay too much attention to the statue that graces the southernmost tip of the Worcester Common. But, no matter what proscriptions may be found in Leviticus, the statue not only resides in a very prominent spot, it is also quite famous...

It has its own website, something we can't always say about other statuary. And it gets exposure in YouTube video clips, too. The Turtle Boy has even been used to help promote commercial ventures. There's even a famous music awards competition named after Worcester's famous Turtle Boy.

Of course, it's really the Burnside Fountain. I've often wondered what it would take to make it a fountain again.

I've replied here :http://worcesterturtleboy.com

And Cascading Waters is correct, it is the Burnside Fountain but no one ever knows what I'm talking about when I call it that. I've posted links to information about the background on our favorite statue on my fan site.

We love Turtle Boy!

In all seriousness, and I am not even kidding with this, when the city government accepts the Turtle Boy as part of the fabric of what makes Worcester what it is, and gladly accepts it, we will be moving in the right direction.

Baltimore accepted it's kitch value long ago and turned it into one of the biggest parts of it's marketing. Worcester could learn something from that.

While indeed we are a "smart" city, we are also an undeniably trashy city, but a great deal of it is trashy with a wink and a nod. It's something the city should embrace and not try to sweep under the rug.
