T&G Website Problems Today

Just a few minutes ago, I clicked over to the T&G website and got this...

It says, "This site www.telegram.com has been reported as an attack site and has been blocked based on your security preferences."

Just a little earlier, I had been over there, and at the top of the page there was a notification that commenting had been turned off for some reason or other... I didn't really pay much attention to it.

But with this blazing warning, one that I've never seen anywhere before, I don't know what might be going on over there today.

Update: I clicked on the "Why was this site blocked?" button and got this:

Based on the info on this page (click on the pic to get a full sized image), it appears that some third party has planted something... maybe that's why commenting was turned off at the T&G site earlier (Actually, I just checked and it still is).

Anyways, this is the first time I've encountered this, or any other kind of Google security thing... when did I sign up for that? I thought that, maybe since I was logged in to Blogger (owned by Google) that this security thingy was active only because of that, so I logged out, and closed Firefox (which dumps all cookies), brought up Firefox again and Voila! I still get this security warning! It's a little creepy, since I don't get that problem if I try accessing the T&G site using Internet Explorer.

Nonetheless, the security advisory is definitely coming from Google. If I go to the Google main page, type in a search for "telegram.com" every single hit has a sub-text link that says, "This site may harm your computer."

Heh... Well, I suppose that if you spend too much time on the T&G website that it might harm your ability to think clearly, but your computer, too?

The warnings are built into Firefox. You can turn them off by going to tools>options>security and unchecking "tell me if the site I'm visiting is a suspected attack site".
BTW earlier in the day prior to the comments being disabled my antivirus (avast) was barking that some of the javascript being pushed out by telegram.com was infected.

Could also be some flaw in their commenting system that let someone post a comment that made the browser do something bad.

(The person in the room with me can get to telegram.com just fine with Firefox on Ubuntu, the same thing I'm running. Not sure why that should be.)

Here's hoping the T&G will acknowledge this and explain the cause.

These are Google warnings, as far as I've been able to see. If you search "telegram.com" on Google, all T&G hits have a subtext saying that the site may damage your computer.

To clarify my comment: Google may be flagging dangerous stuff added to the site in comments.

Yup, that's what it looks like to me, Mike. And according to the google page (in the second picture) it's all just from a single complaint made today.

Internet Explorer simply says:
'http://telegram.com/' is currently unavailable."
I can get there with lynx.

Wow, that's weird, Karl. I've been able to bring up the T&G site all along. Just had the strange intervention of Google flagging it like this... that's what's got me scratching my head.

But as Jeff Worm pointed out, it may well be in tandem with the settings I have on Firefox security levels.

IE brings up the T&G site with no warnings or flags.

My malware program on my work computer blocked a Javascript from the T&G website last night at 5:30 or so.

My surfing habits haven’t changed, yet I’ve had an upswing in viruses/trojans on my home PC (none in the past 5 years, suddenly 3 in the last month).

I wonder if they’re all coming from the T&G- maybe they've been hacked.

Using Firefox, I got the exact same thing as Jeff, at around the same time. I know better than to expect any word from the T&G, so I checked Wormtown Taxi. And sure enough, Jeff had posted this a few minutes earlier.

The T&G server is always very lame. Slow, buggy, error-prone. And don't cha hate the way it reloads on you when your trying to read an article? No doubt that's done to load more annoying shockwave ads. I hate that.
