Turtle Boy 1955

This is truly priceless!

The look on that kid's face is even more priceless!

The source for this picture is on page four at this link (pdf).

It's an entire article from the February 1955 issue of National Geographic, entitled, "Cities Like Worcester Make America".

Bill Randell posted a link to it this morning.

That's a great find, Bill!

At that point in time, the Turtle Boy was located across the street in Salem Square, somewhat opposite from where it is now, according to Claudia Snell's official Turtle Boy Facts page.

I remember what that part of the city looked like in those days...

I could even have been the kid in that picture, as he looks about the same age I was in 1955.

Plenty of interesting pix in that article, and if you've been around here for a few years, you may actually recognize some of the people in the pictures.

The guy on the left in this picture from the WPI campus, for instance...

He looks very familiar to me, like a blast from the past that doesn't quite gel into a name...

And there are a couple other faces in there that look vaguely familiar, too.

Meanwhile, on pages 21 & 22, there's a great aerial view of Lake Quinsigamond, looking west onto what is now the UMass campus and Biotech park, before any development was ever done at all.

Heh. And then there's the Coca-Cola ad at the end... y'know?... long before Viagra?

I've got an original copy of this issue I picked up off ebay a few years back. I believe Kaz from Worcester Love swiped it from me last, thanks for the reminder to track it down!
