I managed to catch a picture of the newly installed video triggers up there on the new traffic light assemblies in Trumble Square today.
It's hard to tell if the electrician installed them, or someone like him...
At any rate, these camera-like items are used to detect whether any vehicles are at the stop lines, and can trigger a change of the lights.
The first ones I saw here in the city were at Rice Square, back in the Spring of 2008. I thought they were red light cams, but was quickly disabused of that idea by someone who claimed to work for a company that made this particular model of optical detector.
The story is that they are neither capable of doing double duty as traffic light triggers AND red light cameras, nor are they even capable of the resolution needed to do dedicated duty as red light cameras...
Besides, at every intersection where they've been installed here in Worcester so far, they're always aimed the wrong way to be red light cams.
